quilting the Minnesota barn quilt trail:capstone

Here are a fraction of the photos taken over the course of a year long project, titled: Quilting the Minnesota Barn Quilt Trail. Throughout the year’s time, I traveled the backroads of Houston County, MN, finding many captivating rural scenes - most of these barn quilts are part of a larger project started in 2008 by Anne Selness and others. While it would have been a joy to re-create all of these barn quilts into their fabric form, this grant project covers six. Along with quilting and traveling, there is also a short documentary capturing the work, along with my first quilt pattern. It was my goal to connect the timeless nature of rural life and the art of craft. To me, quilting is a hardy craft - one that combines function and precision, resourcefulness and opportunity - much like the life of the farmer. I see these barn quilts as a symbol of warmth in a landscape and lifestyle that demands grit.
