Bark Tanned Sheep Hide: Large Cream
This hide comes from a dear neighbor’s flock. The rug has very clean, dense wool - and is soft to the touch. The leather is free of holes, but does show some score marks from processing. This hide measures approximately 35” x 40” at the widest points.
A naturally tanned sheep hide: Washed with rain water and organic soap and tanned with mimosa bark extract; softened with kitchen oils and egg yolk. Other ingredients in the tanning process include food grade citric acid, salt, and vinegar.
Many hours of careful brushing and cleaning have left the wool soft, but because no harsh chemicals were used, it maintains most of its natural characteristics. Due to the denseness of this wool, there are some remnants of its past life. Living a life of rotationally grazing, there may be bits hay, grass and seeds deep in the wool, although many hours of brushing has gotten most of it out.
To keep clean, air out your hide outdoors, and if needed, bark tanned leather may be hand washed with warm water and mild soap. Dry on a line and smooth out edges. Use a slicker brush to fluff or to remove small stains or dirt spots.
