Bark Tanned Sheep Hide: BFL brown
Bark Tanned Sheep Hide: BFL brown
This hide comes from a Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) sheep from my own flock. The rug is large in size (over 4 feet long!) with beautiful long wool - and is especially soft to the touch. The leather is free of holes and wonderfully soft and flexible.
A naturally tanned sheep hide: Washed with rain water and organic soap and tanned with mimosa bark extract; softened with kitchen oils and egg yolk. Other ingredients in the tanning process include food grade citric acid, salt, and vinegar.
Many hours of careful brushing and cleaning have left the wool soft, but because no harsh chemicals were used, it maintains most of its natural characteristics. Due to the denseness of this wool, there are remnants of its past life. Living through a winter of eating hay, there are bits hay and seeds deep in the wool in some places, although many hours of brushing and picking by hand has gotten most of it out.
To keep clean, air out your hide outdoors, and if needed, bark tanned leather may be hand washed with warm water and mild soap. Dry on a line and smooth out edges. Use a slicker brush to fluff or to remove small stains or dirt spots.
